Two suicide bombers kill 13 near Mogadishu airport in Somalia

Mogadishu, Somalia: Two Suicide bombers killed at least 13 people at the gates of the African Union’s main peacekeeping base in the Somali capital Mogadishu on Thursday.

Unlike previous attacks blamed on the al Qaida-linked militant group al-Shabab, gunmen did not accompany the suicide bomber, Captain Mohamed Hussein said.

The force of the explosions shattered windows at the nearby airport, showered arriving passengers with glass and forced the suspension of flights, police and witnesses said.

Al-Shabab has claimed responsibility for the attacks, according to the group’s Andalus radio station.

Somalia has been experiencing violence since the country’s  civil war in the early 1990s. The state’s collapse provided a breeding ground for warlords, pirates and the al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Shabaab.
