President Al Haji HSM of Somali Federal Government sends  “On behalf of the Somali federal government & its people, I would like to express my deepest condolences to the Family of Mohamed Ali Samatar who passed away peacefully in Virginia, US today. He was a true patriot, field marshal who selflessly served his country through turbulent and precarious time and his loss left a gaping hole in our nation and the families in Somali National Army.”

General Mohamed Ali Samatar was born in 1931 in Kismayo , southern Somalia. His family are originally said to have come from togdher region of Somalia Buhodle.

Samatar was a member of President Siad Barre‘s ruling Supreme Revolutionary Council (SRC).

General Samater spent most of his life in the line of fire, in the place where the State of  Somalia’s fate was decided. In the beginning of his life it was the military line of fire, and later it was the diplomatic line of fire.

From February 1, 1987, to September 3, 1990, Samatar was the national Prime Minister, the first person to fill that post since Barre abolished the position upon seizing power in 1969.
